Wednesday, September 16, 2009 (AP LIT: Period 3)

Objectives:
After this class, students will be able to:
a. work collaboratively to reach a consensus.
b. analyze plot, characterization, conflict, and irony.
c. connect Greek tragedy to their personal lives.

Agenda:
1. Warm-Up: Students will answer the following questions in their notebooks: Which of these situations is the greatest tragedy and why?
a. Death in the family
b. Devastating earthquake
c. Going insane/having a mental breakdown
d. Unknowingly causing someone else’s pain
Ms. Kingsbury will solicit students for their answers.

2. Collaborative Group Work: Students will break out into five groups to create a mini-presentation on the following topics:
a. Group 1: Characters: Oedipus & Creon
For each character, you should write their role in the play, 3 character traits, 2 things they have done so far in the play.
b. Group 2: Characters: Chorus & Teiresias
For each character, you should write their role in the play, 3 character traits, 2 things they have done so far in the play.
c. Group 3: Conflicts: Describe the conflicts between Oedipus and the Priest, Oedipus and Teiresias, and Oedipus and himself.
d. Group 4: Dramatic Irony: Define dramatic irony, then write 3 quotes with page numbers which are examples of dramatic irony – who said it and why it is ironic.
e. Group 5 – Words I Don’t Know: Choose 5 words you didn’t know, write the words and definitions on the board.

HOMEWORK: Read Oedipus pages 39-50. Continue to fill in your note pages (Characters, Conflicts, Dramatic Irony, and Words I Don’t Know).
