Monday 10/4/2013 - Friday 10/11/2013: Juniors

Monday Warm-Up: Please answer the following in your notebook:  When you do something wrong, what is the typical excuse that you give to explain your mistake?  Think of a recent situation where you had to explain why you did something wrong.  Did the person accept your excuse?  5 lines, please!

Wednesday Warm-Up: Please answer the following in your notebook:  Do you have a best friend? If so, what makes that person THE BEST?  If you don’t have a best friend, why do you think that is? Remember, you are not actually required to have a best friend, so don’t feel weird if you don’t!  5 lines, please!

Please note the weekly paper topic of Friends & Enemies.

Following Up Writing to be TURNED IN : Like you did the “5 Teachers” assignment, I want you to write a “5 Students” essay.  3 sentences for each one (examples: the shy one, the class, clown, the kid never in class, etc…..).

For All Seniors: 
1. Weekly Paper Topic: Friends & Enemies 
2. Complete your senior project cover letter rough draft.  You can find the handout HERE.
3. Our day for the computer lab will be on Thursday.  Be prepared to do some senior project work on that day!
4. Research Proposals are due this week.  200 points.  You cannot begin your research without an approved proposal.

Please count up your stamps for the month of September.  If you have a number, add the number in too. Write your name and # on the slip of paper you received. 

Students will complete their lying projects this week.  See Friday, September 27, 2013, for instructions.  This assignment cannot be made up if you have not completed it by the assigned deadline.

This week's weekly paper topic is TRUTH IS.... Due Friday 10/4/2013.  Length: One page filled front and back.


This Week's Independent Reading: Page 441-445 in Reflections: Online Dating:  Please read this article. Then, write a reflection on which online dater is the WORST and why.  Which one is not a big deal and why?  8 lines total. 

Follow-Up Writing: TO BE TURNED IN (100 PTS): Write an essay, like the ones we’ve read, about the 5 types of teachers you meet in high school (the talker, the eater, the one that wants to be your friend, etc.). 5 sentences each.

Did you turn in your career goals essay? Due typed and emailed by Friday 10/4/13. Page 3 of the packet. 

Did you turn in two recommendation request letters? 50 points each.  You can do more for extra credit. You can access the recommendation request letter format by clicking HERE.

Your research proposal is due Thursday!!!  200 points. 

We are doing a resume workshop this week.  Do you have a resume?  Bring it in for Wednesday. You can access the format for the resume by clicking HERE.

For Juniors: Periods 1 & 10:


Warm-Up: Please go to the essay THE WAYS WE LIE (p. 120), and write down, in your own words, the definitions for each of the lie terms.  These can be short (1-2 lines).

Our Lying Project:  Now we will apply the terms that we learned this week.  You will take 3-5 magazines and search for FIVE images or headlines that seem like they could be lies.  You will rip those pages out of the magazine and provide the following explanation:
This image/headline is an example of the lying term:   _____________.  Let me explain how:   __________   (2-3 sentences).  You can write your explanations on a sheet of notebook paper and attach your magazine pages behind it, or you can make a cool collage with the explanations and pictures (I will provide you with paper, scissors, tape, markers, etc.).  YOU DECIDE.  DUE MONDAY!

Also, don’t forget my weekly paper for today.

Seniors in all classes will work on Senior Projects items (career goals essays and recommendation request letters) as well as finish their weekly papers.

Do you have any questions about Senior Project Packet?
1. Make sure you type your personal intros for Friday 9/27.
2. Finish your handwritten Career Goals Essay and turn that in.  You can get the format on page 3 of your packet.  If you get it back today, type it up and email by 10/4.
3. You need to submit 2 recommendation request letters.  Ask for the format of the letter.  Due this week.
4. Research Proposals:  If time permits, you will review the topics and highlight FIVE (5) that sound interesting to you.
5. Tomorrow we will write up the rough draft of our research proposal.

Students will work from the following checklist to continue their work on their Senior Projects:

Today’s Tasks:
1. Please complete the emergency contact form (top part).
2. Today we are going to write Recommendation Request Letters.  You need
recommendations from important grown-ups for college and job applications.  The way to
get a recommendation letter is to write a letter in which you NICELY and HUMBLY ask for
one.  We are going to write 2 of these today.  You received the template on the way in. 
 You may write the same letter twice, but you need to ask two different people (teachers
are best).  I will give you 50 points for each letter (you may do more than 2), and I will
deliver/mail them for you.  Students can get the format for the letters by clicking here
3. Turn in your Career Goals Essay!!
