Objectives:
After this class, students will be able to:
1. write with a clearly defined purpose and for a specific audience.
2. speak intelligently about literature and personal experience and opinion.
3. listen respectfully.
Agenda:
1. Warm-Up: Students should write the following announcement into their notebooks: This is your homework! Write this down! Each month, from now until June, the School District of Philadelphia and Office Depot will give away $500 to an outstanding senior. Write a 1 page essay in which you explain why you should win the money. Discuss your character, academics, and community service. 50 points (and maybe some cash!)
2. Today we will have a class discussion on the following questions about Antigone:
a. The story of Antigone addresses the issue of duty. In your opinion, which is the most important: duty to family, duty to God, duty to yourself, or duty to your gender? Why? Which is the least important?
b. Ismene says to Antigone, “You’re in love with impossibility.” In your personal life, what “impossibility” are you in love with?
c. The Leader says, “Only a fool could be in love with death.” Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Do you feel that Antigone was a fool? Why or why not?
d. Which is better - a slow death or a quick death? Why?
Homework: Students should prepare for their unit test on Antigone tomorrow.
