Wednesday, September 23, 2009 (AP LIT: Period 3)

Objectives:
After this class, students will be able to:
a.  determine the theme of a tragic play.
b. examine a poem's tone, word choice, images, syntax, and theme, to create meaning.
c. annotate a poem to reach a deeper meaning and understanding.


Agenda:
1. Warm-Up: Students should complete the following in their notebooks:  The theme of a story is a one sentence universal message that the story is trying to convey to the reader.  What do you think is the theme of Oedipus?  (1 line! )
       EXAMPLE - Theme: Love heals all wounds.
       NOT a theme: Love
       NOT a theme: Death

2. Students will analyze poetry connected thematically to the story of Oedipus.  They will learn the TWIST reading strategy for analyzing poetry in a speedy but accurate fashion.  Students should see Ms. Kingsbury if they missed class for the appropriate handouts and homework.

Homework:
Students will TWIST two poems for Friday.  See Ms. Kingsbury for the poems.
