Extra Credit Opportunity! Paying Kids For Good School Performance...

Please read this article from the New York Times on the pros and cons of giving students rewards for good performance in schools:

What do you think? Would money and other "extrinsic" rewards be enough to entice you or other students to take and do well on things like AP classes and tests? Is there some other reward other than money that you think would be more effective? 20 points extra credit for a well thought-out opinion of 5 sentences on this topic emailed to ms.kingsbury@verizon.net and/or ms.depow@gmail.com or posted to the COMMENTS section below!

  1. I think that there should not be rewards for achieving something but for the hard work. Like for example, if I get a good report card my parents should say i see you working hard studying and stuff and then give me something. But it should not be because I got five A's I get five dollars. Because I do believe that it makes the children want the reward more than the fact of knowing they accomplished something.

  3. i dont think students should be given rewards for everytime they are require or ask to complete something in their class. i think rewards are okay to be given every now and then, but if their given all the time then that could hold them back if they go to college and are require to do an assignment with out an reward. then that will affect them because they may not see the point of completing the assignment. so students should be rewarded for hardwork not just because they compeleted an assignment.

  4. yes... give me a reward they should do this because I cheat for free If you pay me I would consider stopping. Sike naw for real rewards should be given out when students accomplish something big that doesn't happen often.

  6. I think that students should not get rewarded for doing good in their classes. They should be rewarded for what they accomplishing in their work. Prizes and money should not be giving, doing so makes the student know that if i do good, i can get paid for doing it. Unstead of taking what they did serious.

  7. I'm sort of in the middle with this topic. In the past, I have been given rewards based on my performance in schools. This basically gave me the initiative to continue succeeding in school in order to attain more rewards such as money, toys, or whatever I was into at the time. But initially I did not strive for good grades for rewards, but simply just doing all I can. For a child, I would agree that rewards may help them get better grades but as a young adult they should know that the true reward is a new valuable skill.

  8. In my opinion i think that children should be rewarded for doing good. I think that this should only be appointed to an extent. What i mean by this is that kids should be rewarded for their accomplishments but not in the sense of prizes like money, toys, or candy. i think that the only sensible thing would be certificates. their a lasting reward that should be given to make the students feel proud of themselves...which is the object of recognition right?

  10. i do not think there is anything wrong with rewarding children/teens for their good efforts. money is always a good motivator. rewarding us for a job well done is a good way to start us off for our futures. when we get into the real world we have to work hard to get what we want/need, so why not start now learning how to do so. the earlier you learn something, and the longer you stick with it, the better u will be able to work with it in the future.

  11. I agree, i do think that kids should be rewarded for their accomplishments ad not for every little thing he/she does. A certificate does say it all and it is longer lasting which most younger kids will appreciate. But as you grow older something that will be or is usable at that time seems more appropriate.
