Extra Credit Opportunity: More Fun Electives Needed?

Click on the title of this post to read a NY Times article about the boom in electives around the country. You may also cut and paste the link below into a new window:

What do you think? Are more electives a good thing or do they water down the high school curriculum? If you had your choice, what electives would you take? 20 points EC for a well thought-out opinion of 5 sentences posted in the COMMENTS section here or emailed to ms.kingsbury@verizon.net.

  1. i believe it a good thing. i believe that our curriculm today in public schools are really boring abd un-helpful. not alot of students like the classes that they take. the reason for that is because they have little say in what they take. of tere were better electives that the students liked then the results/ grades of thoses clases would most likely go up compared to a regular elective. if i had my choice i dont really know what elective i would take. but the only downfll to that is i may be the only student that would like to take that elective.

  2. i think adding electives is a good thing. if i had a choice i would take a sewing class. it is something that i am good at and would like to perfect. adding electives is not watering down a curriculum it is giving students the opportunity to see what they like and what they are good at. Not everyone is going to have a completely academic life. It is good for them to see what all their options are, instead of restricting them by only giving the academic classes.

  3. Before reading the article, I was dedicated to my opinion that there was no need for my electives. I found electives quite boring and useless, I'd rather take a class that actually meant something. No offense to electives. But the article changed my view, as long as they're fun, they can add a new element to school life. For the most part, electives are fun additions, which is in contrast to the more dull, boring classes such as Math and Science. English is cool! Yay! Anyway,I agree that more electives is the way to go.

  4. My opinion on these electives in simple terms is they rock!! If Overbrook offer more electives then i would double my classes. The only problem i guess they would have is paying the teachers and gain material. But that would be easily paid for by applying for grants. Maybe some one should go to Ms. Young with these ideas.

  5. I think that is a great idea. When I went to Williamsport Area H.S., in Williamsport, Pa, we had a lot of elective classes, I took wood shop, metal shop, and electric shop. I understand that some school districts don't have the money for it, but it's a great way to bring kids back to our neighborhood schools. Regular schools don't have the extra things or specialty schools have and as a result students go elsewhere. This would definitely improve GPAs in a school like Overbrook, which in itself is a great school, but this would make it an awesome school.

  6. Yeah, I totally believe more electives are good. A majority of classes taken right now are no use to some of the fields people are heading in. For example; music what does that to do with being a nurse. Also calculus what does that have to do with me doing animation. If I could have any elective it would most likely be home economics because I really don't understand why we don't have that elective already, but the suburban schools do.

  7. I think more electives would be a good thing just as long as the students get to pick them because alot of the electives that we have now students were force to take them because the school doesn't offer many options. so if the school had more electives than student would have more to chose from and it would also help student chose electives that go with their career of choice

  9. I believe that the electives is a good thing. I think that because some of the classes could show us how to do things better to help us with senior projects and other things needed done for classes. For example with technology it helps us to learn how to type documents faster or use software that can help us with the senior project.
