YOU WILL TURN BOTH ASSIGNMENTS IN TODAY BY THE END OF CLASS. These assignments are based on your reading of the story "On Compassion" from the 50 Essays book.

Writing Assignment #1:
Flip the Script – Change Perspective: 1 page
You will now write a follow-up to this essay.  You must come up with a title.  You will write from the perspective of the homeless man.  What does he see around him? How does he feel about his situation and the people who ignore or pay attention to him?  Use the scenarios within the essay to spin off from – write in first person using I.

Writing Assignment #2:
Analyze Rhetorical Strategies: 1 page
The author uses two rhetorical strategies to make her argument about compassion towards homeless people.  She uses pathos imagery (imagery that makes you feel an emotion), and she uses rhetorical questions (the ones we answered for our classwork yesterday).  Write an essay in which you describe the effectiveness of these strategies.  How did they make her argument more powerful? You will need 4 short paragraphs:

  1. Introduction (2 sentences)
  2. Pathos Imagery (4 sentences)
  3. Rhetorical Questions (4 sentences)
  4. Conclusion (2 sentences)
