Friday, October 3, 2008

NOTE: This was our planned lesson for the day. However, due to high interest in student discussion of the topic of Oedipus, Freud, and the tragic character, we held a full class discussion rather than complete this activity.

Students still have a test on Monday and are responsible for completing the homework questions.

Ms. Kingsbury Friday, October 3, 2008

Objectives:

After this class, students will be able to:
1. define the term archetype and give an example from Greek drama.
2. define and apply literary analytical approaches (psychological, mythological, and deconstructionist)
3. prepare for a final exam on Oedipus the King.

Agenda:
1. Warm-Up: Students will answer the following question in their notebooks: What is the definition of archetype (hint - if you haven't already done so, look in your book's glossary)? Give an example of an archetype from Oedipus the King. Ms. Kingsbury will solicit answers from students.

2. Student Group Work: Today students will work in groups to create posters of a literary analytical strategy: Psychological (pages 2038 - 2040), Mythological (2046 - 2048), or Deconstructionist (2050 - 2052). Posters will be worth 100 points. Posters should include:
a. definition of the literary analysis term
b. 4 key ideas related to this term
c. how this relates to the play of Oedipus

Students will share their posters with the class. Even though students are not reading about each analytical approach in class, they are responsible for knowing about each one.

Homework:
a. Due Monday, October 6, 2008:
